In March 2018, leading up to the launch of the game Sea of Thieves, developers Rare and Microsoft hosted a global digital treasure hunt with a substantial real-world prize. This high-profile event, known as "The Quest for the Golden Bananas," saw players from around the world competing to solve complex riddles and challenges over several days.
The grand prize for this event was four real-life 18-carat gold bananas. These unique items were a physical representation of the in-game currency and were awarded to the winning team, "Herr Crew" from France. The total prize was valued at £80,000, making it a truly substantial reward for the victorious competitors.
